This is purely for those that are "really curious" about some details about
some details about our system.
- Weather Servers (data collecting and web server) are Win2000 Server, running at
2.44ghz
- The Storm & Radar Imaging computer is a 3.2ghz machine with 2 gigs ram.
- Primary software is Virtual Weather Station, version V14.00, This is what
generates some of the graphs and uploads them.
- Secondary weather software includes: VPLive, VirtualVP, WeatherLink
- Weather Station is Davis Instruments Wireless Vantage Pro/2 Plus
- Web Cam software is ImageSalsa
- Web Cam is an El-Cheapo off ebay in a home-made waterproof housing
(Converted a 6v flashlight)
- TimeLapse software is MovieSalsa
- Tidal data is actually pulled from another site
- Quake, Weather Alert, Marine forecasts are pulled from government
websites. (NOAA, USGC etc)
- We use images & videos from Accuweather and WeatherUnderground, as
well as NOAA
- There is actually a lot of ASP/VBScript going on in the background to
adjust text, images, etc. As well as several PHP scripts to collect &
parse data.
- The "raw" data is on the "weather server"
- We are located at Latitude/Longitude: -122.6980591/47.1720085 (220ft
elevation)
- We do NOT transfer all the pages, with the exception of the mesonet map
webpage, all pages are "static" and use variables, so updates are much
faster (one file is included on all web pages, vs. uploading multiple
webpages)
- This site makes use of Server side scripting (ASP
& PHP),
Java, and client
side scripting (Javascript) in addition to standard web work (html) We
also use several windows based Binaries (programs).
- We are using Ajax to update some values dynamically in near real-time
(Thanks to Ken of
www.saratoga-weather.com for his script & help (slightly modified)
If your browser does not support Javascript; you will need to refresh the
page manually.
- We are using Variables from fox weather (scripts heavily modified)
- The Lightning/Storm detection is composed of:
Software:
Astrongenic.com [Both Windows and Java Applet]
Hardware: Antenna and PCI Card by
Boltek.com
- All computers are on UPS's -- and the facility on Anderson Island is
backed up by a 17.5KW generator -- power outages usually yield website
updates infrequently; but are usually up to date during the day. DSL
Outages have no current backup -- however, we are considering a Sprint
Broadband backup solution. This is what usually results in the "technical
difficulty" warning
- Due to a crash on access of the Lightning data (when the data card is
accessed) on random basis, we installed a Berkshire PCI Watchdog card, which
will reset the computer in less than 1 minute if it should hang -- this
should vastly improve our up time and data quality.
